Classic Engagement Ring And Setting, Engagement Ring Question ?
Q.I've always found that figure amusing. Were, for instance, my boyfriend to buy me an engagement ring (not something we're thinking about, but just as an example) on his current salary as "instructor" at a reasonably well-known university, he'd probably be arrested for vandalism for shaking the gumball machine too hard.
A.Spending two months' salary on an engagement ring is an idea perpetuated by DeBeers and other diamond miners/merchants and definitely not to be taken seriously. I think the $1600 figure is pretty accurate for an average though. My now-husband got a good deal on my rings because his father knows a diamond wholesaler in California. I third this. DH and I had the money to buy me a rock, but I wanted to spend it on other things. I got a nice 2 ct emerald cut CZ ring from Neiman Marcus and last year upgraded the stone to an 2.1 ct emerald cut Asha simulant (it is a new type of diamond simulant which incorporates actual diamond particles) I got from www.betterthandiamond.com and it cost $420. I have no affiliation with the website, but I highly recommend checking it out because they also have lab grown diamonds and some beautiful rings. My 'diamond' fools everyone, including the salesperson in Bailey Banks and Biddle this weekend. I was looking for a new setting for my stone and was milling around the display cases. This salesperson grabbed my hand and gushed over what a beautiful diamond I had ("Did you get it here?" "No."). I know a lot of people will only settle for the real deal, but I don't see the point in spending thousands for something when you can get something just as beautiful for much less. I would need something really understated, because I would want to wear it all the time, but rings are a problem when playing the piano. My friend recently got married, and she got a very simple classic solitaire ring as an engagement ring, and the ring keeps turning around when she plays, and gets in the way horribly. Her wedding ring has sapphires in a channel setting, and that one stays put, and it may end up that she will only wear her engagement ring with the wedding ring when she's not playing - which is rare. I've learned my lesson from her, and I'm thinking that if I ever get married, maybe something like a dead plain white gold or platinum band with teeny stones in a channel setting would be what I'd need to do to ever be able to wear it - and possibly no engagement ring at all, just the wedding band. I can't have my hands weighed down.
