Jewelry Q & A

Cheap Diamond Bracelet

Q.Anyone have any experience purchasing a diamond on the Internet from a place like Blue Nile or Mondera? How are the prices? The quality? I'm thinking about buying a diamond from Mondera, but a friend of mine gave me grief for being "unromantic".

A.My company is a diamond/jewelry wholesaler in New York and a VERY large one at that. We sell to Neiman's, Nordstrom, etc., and you may have seen our diamond line bracelet ads in Elle, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, etc. over the past few months. Also they've been in business almost 100 years and have a great rep. in the business. So! here's a bit of advice from someone who sees what is going on behind the scenes: Personally, I think you need to see the diamond before you buy it. Every stone is different. Just because you have a list of things that some author of a diamond book says you need in a stone, doesn't mean you're going to get a great stone. I think you actually need to SEE the stone to see how it is cut, etc. That is so important. Even D/VVS1 stones are cut poorly, and even though they have great color and clarity, if the cut is poor it ruins the life of the stone. The cut depends on the retailers and who they buy from. Unfortunately some mall retailers (I'll refrain from naming any) buy cheap and poorly cut stones... then they put huge mark-ups on them and prey on people who don't know anything about diamonds and haven't looked around. Also, a lot of these employees have no clue what they're talking about--many of them were probably working in the shoe industry a week before. Know what I mean? Here's a bit of advice. You can take it or leave it--I got married a few months ago and I'm glad I had the knowledge about all of this, and I love my ring (3 stone-rounds) Anyway... just a few random thoughts on all of this. A year ago I knew none of it and didn't even want a diamond! Then I got this job, studied hard, and got married... I want to help out other people so they don't get ripped off--it's a huge, important purchase and there is way too much misleading/wrong information out there already...
