Cathedral Setting Engagement Ring, What Does Your Ring Look Like?Q.What does your engagement ring look like? Is it elaborate or simple? Did you pick it out or did he? If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something different? If so, what? What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with it? Is it a set? Will they match? What does he plan to get? Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both? (or not?) A.My engagement ring is vintage/antique (dates from the 1930s). It is the traditional style of that era: a yellow gold band, with the diamond solitaire set in a white gold, square mounting. The mounting is diamond-cut to enhance the look of the diamond (it makes it look bigger and more sparkly). The mounting itslef has carvings on the "front" and "back" that resemble tiaras. On the band, to the east and west of the diamond/mounting are white gold bits, diamond-cut to look like more diamonds. It is fairly straightforward and simple, a classic example of a 1930s engagement ring, but prolly looks a bit fussy compared to the bare, Tiffany-set solitaire that is the current standard. My One picked it out for me. I have my late grandmother's engagement ring, which is a similar style (but dates to the 1910s), and he knows how lovely I think it is. He kept that in mind when he went to a huge antiques co-op in a nearby town, and asked a vendor there for a ring "like Myrna Loy would have had." He brought two co-workers with him (both women)--one for her aesthetic sense, the other to do the tough-talking (she bargained the ring down to half its original price). I had my heart set on a designer ring I saw in a magazine. We even went to a local chichi jeweler to try it on and found out it was not as expensive as we thought. BUT. . .not as expensive as we thought is still too expensive. Anyhell, I love the ring he got me even more because he picked it out himself. Since I was about 15, there's been an ad for a custom jeweler in every week's "Boston Globe Magazine." I've longed to have one of their unique, gorgeous creations for my wedding ring. We intend to bring our (fairly limited) budget to them and hope they can make me up a pretty little something in white gold. I'm bringing them some old white-gold and yellow-gold jewelry that they can hopefully incorporate into my new ring, thus offsetting some of the cost. Tim wants a plain, white-gold band. Not too wide. Plain. It won't necessarily match mine, except in colour. Does my ring fit my lifestyle/personality? Hmm. . .I suppose so. I did have a hard time getting rid of the other rings I used to wear on my left hand--I used to wear 11 rings on 8 fingers. Now I'm down to only 5 rings on 5 fingers. That was an adjustment. O.K. O.K. We are probably going a little hard on this guy. My intention of this thread was not to get into an arguement about what is most important in a diamond. Obviously, everyone has different opinions, and we should respect everyone's opinions. As far as giving other guys advice, I would just keep quiet. They can all do their own research and come to their own conclusion as to what is most important to them and their girlfriend (since we have obiously found that everyone has different opinions on this.) That is what most guys do. I don't think that guys just go out and buy the first diamond they see. As I was saying, my intention of this thread was just to find out what everyone's ring looks like. I just like to see the different tastes people have, not argue about them. I am very interested in what other people find to be the ideal engagement ring. Let's just go back to sharing and not arguing Other Questions : Design Your Own Engagement Ring?I have been researching engagement rings for a year, and I have a question.
