Jewelry Q & A

Canary Diamond Ring, Prices/Qualities of Rings ?

Q.How do you choose rings and if they are worth what the jeweler says? I have spoken to my boss' niece who is a private jeweler and she can get a ring at only a little over wholesale because she doesn't mark up that much. I may use her because some of these markups are outrageous! With this lady, she isn't only trying to make a sale...I don't feel pressured...the other places are so, I don't know, pushy and "you better get this now or it won't be on sale anymore." And "anyone else you talk to will tell you the quality isn't as nice, but if you can't see the flaws, who cares?" My boss' niece told me to make sure I look it over under the microscope and if they say it is a higher quality, make SURE it is. I guess the ring I was looking at is a J,K,F which I guess means the diamond is more yellow? Should I worry about this if I can't see the yellowness? Any advice for ring shopping is appreciated.

A.J,F,K are NOT good colors! Look for something at least G or F, possibly higher if you can afford it--a yellow diamond (unless it's a rare canary diamond) is usually very obvious, especially if it's set in yellow gold. I don't know where you live, but my husband found my ring at Jeweler's Row in Philadelphia, and got a great deal on it. I know that New York and Miami also have "diamond districts" where you can price-shop and bargain hunt. You really need to go to lots of different stores, keep track of the price for unset diamonds and note their color, carat, cut, and inclusions ("clarity). In terms of assessing price: there is a website, www.bluenile.com, that lists prices for unset diamonds, and I think their prices are pretty close to the average retail price you'd find most places in the U.S. If you can find a jeweler who will sell you a diamond of comparable quality for significantly less than what they want, you'll find a good deal. I hate the jewelry shops that presure me with the "it's on sale today" tactic, and I have walked out of more stores than I can count who have tried that on me. My advice is to go to a jewler you feel comfortable with, take your time, comparison shop and do your research. Also, ask for recommendations from friends and co-workers; they will know the good places in your area better than we will. There are a lot of things to consider when making an expensive jewelry choice, and you shouldn't be pressured into it. Since I haven't ever bought a white diamond, I can't give you specific advice on that... other than the generic "know your 4Cs". (Colored diamonds on the other hand...)
