Canary Diamond Engagement Ring, Are engagement rings archaic????Q.What bugs me the most are the ads by DeBeers, which essentially say that if a guy isn't ready to spend two months' salary on a piece of rock, he's an incredibly insensitive jerk who doesn't deserve to marry the woman. A.I just got engaged recently (Dec. 22, 1994). Ken surprised me with a ring. It was something that HE wanted to do, it was nothing that I EXPECTED from him. Money is kind of tight so I honestly expected a proposal but no ring, which was fine with me. Instead, Ken bought me a beautiful ring with a modest diamond. I love it. I am not much of a jewelry fan anyway, and this is keeping with my personal style and taste. (I have always agreed with Truman Capote, who asserted that "diamonds look tacky before the age of forty" in "Breakfast at Tiffany's.") Here's the thing, though---Ken was very worried that I would not like the ring because he didn't get me the Canary diamond or something on that scale!!! It's unbelievable, those DeBeers commercials that have the audacity to suggest that a man spend TWO MONTHS' SALARY on a ring!!!! And what's even more unbelievable is that those commercials work on the sensibilities of many males (my fiance', anyway) and make them feel guilty for not buying a huge honkin' rock that would probably render the wearer incapable of doing anything thereafter with her left hand!!! My engagement ring means a lot to me because it was a gift from my man, something HE wanted to do. I'll never forget the look on his face when he asked me. I'll never forget that we got engaged in a deli in Manhattan when the Knicks were in town. Ken thinks that the diamond isn't worth much because he stuck to a modest budget. He'll never know how much that ring is worth to me. These ads annoy the hell out of me too. Now, I tend to *like* rings. (I don't know why, I just do). My husband will *NOT* buy jewelry of any sort. He thinks it is stupid. He'd rather spend *his* money on things *he* thinks are important. (like computers, modems, stereo equipment and the like.) We have a great system. He buys what he likes and I buy what I like. Neither one of us insists that the other buy anything that they don't want to buy. He buys his *electronics* and I buy rings. Neither one of us puts down the other for their own particular interest and neither one tries to force the other to purchase them. When we married, I bought *his* wedding band and he bought mine. (His was more expensive, by the way.) :-) Any other jewelry I have, I bought for myself. And it doesn't bother me. Other Questions : buying diamond stud earrings / Kwiat .I think I am going to finally buy a pair of diamond stud earrings. So the question I have is does the "name" really matter? Beyond the 4c's of quality, does anything else matter? In particular, I thought about buying .25 carats studs from Kwi... Pink Diamond Earring.J.Lo was blown away by the $1.1 million pink diamond engagement ring Ben gave her awhile back. But suddenly the bauble that had Hollywood abuzz isn't such a big deal. At least not since Puffy took note and one-upped Benny boy. The music mogul i... 2 Carat Diamond Earring .They're pretty, but not thousands of dollars worth of pretty. If I had to choose between a diamond and an equivalent dollar amount of CDs, I'd go for the CD's without blinking (stereo equipment -- now that's happiness!) What if I lost it/got mu... engagement ring that's not a diamond ?What type of stone do you like in engagement rings where the stone isn't a diamond. Most of the diamonds out there are mined by companies that exploit their workers and violate some of their basic human and civil rights and I don't think that ...
