buying wedding/engagement ring without size ?
Q.I want to surprise my girlfriend with an engagement ring and proposal. But I don't know her ring size and don't know how to get it without asking her and ruining the surprise. She doesn't wear any rings so I couldn't use one to get the size. What to do?
A.Most rings can be sized easily. Guesstimate her size (perhaps a good friend or relative of hers can help), pick something you think will be close, and then after the proposal take the ring in to be resized. Most jewelers can do this very quickly. If you want to be sneakier, try to see if you can get a girlfriend of hers to get her out ring shopping to figure out her size and her preference in styles. A clever friend (perhaps one who can pretend to be interested for her own sake) can perhaps figure out a plausible way to do this without arousing her suspicions. Does your girlfriend have any leather gloves? They can give you a general idea as to her finger size. Or, assuming that you really know your girlfriend's hands, you can go to a jeweler and do a comparison with a female worker at the jeweler. One thing to consider: knuckles. My fiancee would be a size 5 ring if her knuckles weren't how they are. She really needs a 6 because of them, but we decided to the 5 1/2 struggle so that the ring wouldn't slip too much when it's on. Is your girlfriend a deep sleeper? You can take a piece of string or dental floss or paper and wrap it around her finger when she's asleep, marking the circumference of her finger. Does your girlfriend have any girly girlfriends who YOU trust? You could have them go shopping and the friend can suggest that they try on rings for fun. Then the friend can report back to you. You can take a butcher's knife and ...oh wait, maybe that's a bad idea.
