Build Your Own Engagement Ring?Q.I may need to be doing this pretty soon (the way things are going as of now)! =) I've known him since I was about about 13 or 14, so you know the drill... =) Anyways, back to the topic! Have any of you ever designed your own engagement rings? If so, how did it turn out? I can't stand the thought of wearing a ring on my finger for the rest of my life, and having 25,000 other people wearing the SAME exact one! ;) Any tips for me? A.Have fun, but I have one suggestion...design/sketch to your heart's content but you should pass it by someone who works in the (jewelry manufacturing) trade before setting your heart on a particular design. Something that may really strike your fancy may be (due to the nature of the materials themselves) impossible to actually fabricate. This happens *all* the time in his shop when the sales people "up front" design something for a customer without thinking about how feasible it actually is to make - this can be messy, or you can end up with a less-than-stable piece of jewelry. Not to put you off, you can do alot of neat designs...just be sure before you get the final design down. I had been with my fiancee for four years before he asked me to marry him, so I pretty much knew it was coming also. I have always loved princess cut stones, but find that, when set, they look a little funny because of the way the prongs go around the stone, so I opted for a square radiant cut stone (actually pretty hard to find). These are also called cushion cut, because the sides are beveled and the corners a little 'softer' than that of a princess. Also the radiants have much more sparkle than the princess cuts do because there are more facets..but that wasn't your question...sorry. I also got my ring in platinum (you'll be very glad you did--it's beautiful). I looked at hundreds of rings before I decided on the setting that I wanted. At www.adiamondisforever.com they have thousands of ring designs that you can look at (as well as designing your own). You can also check out www.mondera.com www.diamond.com www.ashford.com At ashford.com (where I got my center stone--which we then sent to an independent appraiser to verfiy that the stone was what ashford said it was) you can even see many actual stones as they have scanned in pictures. My stone (1.01 ct, E color, IF clarity--internally flawless) was appraised by an independent gemologist at 30% higher than what my fiancee paid at Ashford.com. The gemologist told us that we really got a good deal on our ring. In addition, ashford gives a 30 day money back guarantee and 1-yr insuranc on the stone. I mean, I'm sure the other diamond etailers give similar deals, so you may want to look around. I hope some of this was helpful! If you have any other questions, please ask! I spent many hours doing research so that I would have my perfect ring and I would be happy to share my findings!
