diamond ring question ?Q.Can anyone answer these two questions for me? Is a pear-shaped diamond usually worn with the point toward the hand or toward the nails? For those of you who are married? do you usually wear both your band and your engagement ring? If so, how do they fit together and which is on the "hand side" of your finger? A.If I had a pear-shaped stone, I'd have the point towards the nails, I think. I wear both my engagement ring and my wedding band, which lie flat against one another. The wedding ring goes on the finger first, so that it is closer to the heart, according to tradition. My SO and I have decided not to get an engagement ring either. I also know two couples who opted for stones other than diamonds. I even recently saw on a TV drama where the woman said she didn't want a diamond engagement ring because of the diamond cartels (Shouldn't it just be cartel-singular ie. DeBeers?). Anyway, is this becoming more common: passing on an engagement ring all together or going with something non-traditional? My grandmother says that engagement rings are a relatively recent phenomenon. my reason was less altruistic ;) i have very short fingers between my knuckle and hand and i didn't want 2 bands. also, at that time, money was tight and better spent on wedding expenses as well... I never wanted a diamond cause my mom's ring is a gorgeous ruby, so I got it stuck in my head that engagement rings shouldn't have diamonds at a young age. Plus, I really don't like the way a diamond looks in the first place, and I don't like DeBeers either... So no diamonds for me. IIRC engagement rings aren't exactly new, but they were not a very widespread phenomenon until sometime in this century. And the diamond engagement ring is most definitely a modern phenomenon. Historically, an engagement ring would quite likely be a hand me down, and not necessarily a diamond, just a hard durable stone (diamond, sapphire, ruby...). My engagement ring is a "London Blue" topaz-- very dark, teal blue. I still get lots of compliments on this ring, which I've worn now for almost a decade. My husband, who was a graduate student when we got engaged, looked all over the area for a unique ring. It sounds corny, but I love the smile HE gets on his face when someone compliments my ring. I just got engaged a month ago and I so ditto what you're saying. Spending a large amount of money for some ring doesnt mean anything to me. I'd rather use the money to go on holiday or something heh. Besides, a store bought ring just because I'm 'supposed to have one' to me, is inane. But people don't believe I'm engaged because I 'don't have the ring' or people think bad of my boyfriend because he didn't get one. When my husband and I were engaged 7 years ago, we discussed the whole "engagement ring" topic, and I told him I didn't want a diamond (I don't like diamonds all that much - I prefer colored stones). In fact, we decided not to get a RING, at all. Instead, I said I wanted to put the "ring" money towards the down payment on a house. We had a small civil ceremony (being Catholic and Jewish, a religious ceremony would have been tricky), no honeymoon, and lived in a rat-trap basement apartment for our first year of marriage. But, after all that, we bought our house. Whenever someone asked why I didn't wear my engagement ring, I would explain "I didn't want one, so, my husband bought me a house instead". Eventually, my husband got tired of the comments, and spent about $100 on a round cubic zirconia flanked by small green CZ's and white CZ baguettes all set in silver. Now, I get compliments on my "gorgeous" ring all the time. I still tell people it's not real, and I have a house instead. Apparently, people can't tell the difference unless they're staring right into the stone. However, I will be having a ring made to be worn with my wedding band. My husband bought me a 1.73 carat unset emerald for Christmas, and I will get it custom-set for my birthday in March. My husband has known about my love for emeralds for years, and it was this purchase, where he scoured sources looking for the best possible quality/size stone for the price he could afford AND gave me the opprotunity to set it myself that means more to me than any diamond - no matter how many months of salary he indebted himself - ever would.
