Jewelry Q & A

Poll: engagement/wedding rings ?

Q.After 25 years of marriage, believe me, your priorities change. Instead of spending $5,000 to replace that diamond one day...take a trip to Paris or put a down payment on a house. The love you share is the most important part of a marriage....not the size of the diamond on your finger. I never got a diamond engagement ring. Mine is a gorgeous opal and I love it. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

A.Yeah, I may just leave that stone in there forever. It's just not important to spend a lot of money on it. It's the symbolism that matters. He worked his ass off and paid cash for my ring, working overtime. It just makes my heart swell to look at it. and I adore opals...I almost considered a blue sapphire, too. I'v only been married for 6 (blissful!) months. I am a sap for wedding stories too... I NEVER paid attention to engadgement rings before I got mine. My engagement ring is a platinum 1ct round stone (can't think of the real term) with .20 baguettes on each side. Love it, still find myself staring at it, but mainly because I can't believe I'm married:) It was a surprize...although I did hint around that I wanted platinum and a round stone. My wedding ring is a platinum band with 7 (very!) little diamonds. My husband has a simple gold band. I have to say, he looks 10X better when he has the ring on! :) I wear it on my left hand. I still need to do something tho about the way that they always "clink" together. In the winter months, the rings don't fit as well as they do in the summer. I dream of finding the one I lost over 4 years ago. I have no idea what happened to it, but I've assumed that I just had it resized too soon after having my baby and it just slipped off my finger one day. It was an original design of tri-color gold, using my mother's engagement diamond, and my husband has a matching band. He bought me a gorgeous, jaw-dropping replacement as a surprise a few months afterward when we were pretty sure my original was gone for good, but as stunning as is the new one, I'd trade it in a second for my real one. Well, the other day, my boyfriend and I were in SF, and we decided to go into TIffany & Co. just to look around. A really nice gentleman decided to show us the engagement ring case, and after trying a few on, I've decided that I cannot wear anything larger than a .6 carat. My hands and fingers are very slim and tiny (size 4), and I don't want a ring that overpowers my hands (and I'm sure the comment made my boyfriend's wallet much happier =P). I loved their new square-cut engagement ring 'Lucida' though =D. It was a simple diamond set in a simple but elegant setting (I, of course, prefer the platinum, but it comes in gold as well). If the diamond is about .5 carats, it's about as wide as the band, and it looks like it's bezel set -- very modern! I think that's what I'd like to have =). You have such excellent taste! I see women all the time with *huge* rings that look so extremely gaudy to me, and overpower not just their hand, but their entire outfit! (Ah, the joys of working at the Chanel counter) And you know when they get that huge with it, it's not about love or symbolism, but showing off how much money they have (or their men have). Some of my absolute favorite rings that I've seen have been really petite, but unique in design. And of course, I love to see women get all sappy and stuff when I bring up how much I love their rings. I *heart* anything bezel set. Not only modern, but very safe for the stone! Beautiful and practical. Oh, I just remembered...one of my favorite engagement rings I ever saw, I saw on a customer at Merle Norman when I worked there. (what the hell has happened to my grammar?) It was a 25pt diamond in a plain tiffany setting...but it was BLUE!!! I had never seen a blue diamond before.
