Jewelry Q & A

Baguette Diamond Bracelet

Q.this is my first post here. I just wanted to ask if anyone knows of any sites or FAQs that could tell me anything about Sapphires. X-Mas is coming soon, and I thought I might get my girlfriend a Sapphire bracelet, or ring, or depending on the price, both. I know a fair amount about diamonds, b/c I've been looking at diamond engagement rings, but know nothing about what to look for in sapphires. I know some people avoid mall stores for diamonds, but are they okay for other stones? Should I hunt around chains, privately owned stores and pawn shops, or will any of the above do? When I look at the stone, what should I be looking for?

A.You can bet that in the mall stores you will definitely pay the most for what is quite likely an inferior stone. Smaller independent stores often have bargains, but not always. Many of the things valuable in diamonds are also important in colored stones. Before you buy a diamond, which has no real value other than what has been created by the Debeers monopoly, consider a colored stone. A top quality ruby or sapphire has much more intrinsic value than the best diamond and is usually cheaper per carat. Royals usually do not give diamonds as engagement rings. Look up what Diana & Fergie got for engagement rings. Look for even color throughout the stone. Check the cut of the stone for even facets that meet at the corners in matched fashion. Clarity is determined by lack of inclusions and cloudy places or veils. Carat weight is not as important as the size of the stone. Many colored stones are not cut in the standard round brilliant like diamonds so it is difficult to compare the size of diamonds versus colored stones. Always buy an unmounted stone as you can really check for flaws that are not readily evident when mounted. I personally do not sell diamonds or many top quality colored stones either. Check on ebay for a seller named "shareek". He sells very good quality stones at extremely reasonable prices. He is reputable and guarantees his stones to be as advertised. He currently has a beautiful dark blue emerald cut sapphire weighing 2.2 cts. for only $120.00. I am not associated with this seller in any way other than as a satisfied customer.
