Jewelry Q & A

Engagement ring question ?

Q.It is quite striking and I can imagine my wife wearing it throughout our marriage as well. It is a platinum ring with a very beautiful diamond. It is the engagement ring and she does not have the matching wedding ring (if one ever existed). She recently had it appraised and sized for her finger. We are planning a trip to Paris in March to celebrate our relationship anniversary. I plan to propose to her on that trip. I would like to give her a ring to mark our engagement and to wear on the trip. I also want to be open to her wearing her grandmother's ring. It is of significently greater value than I could afford and she made it clear that she does not want me to purchase an expensive ring. How can I give her a gift that would mark our engagement and still make it possible for her to wear her grandmother's ring?

A.You could always pick up a heart shaped diamond pendant necklace. I received one a couple of years ago that I love more than any other piece of jewelry. They're fairly inexpensive too, around $150-$200 for a nice looking one. Another option is ear rings to match her ring. Pick a nice size diamond with a setting that matches her ring. Why not give her a pair of diamond (or other stone) earrings? Or, perhaps, make sure you bring the grandmother's ring and tell her you want her to wear it since it means so much to her. Then you can shop for wedding bands together. Why not propose with a wedding band? Find one that matches or works with the setting (or doesn't -- mine don't match (both are somewhat older) and I happily wear them on different hands) and propose with it? A solid band looks really beautiful with a diamond ring on the finger. You could always get a small diamond that rests inside the band if you wanted to spice it up, or maybe just a beautiful note expressing how much you love her grandmother's ring and wish to offer you a simple engagement band to accompany that on your wedding day. One more thing..you are going to be in Paris......little will go wrong I imagine! Something else that would work, have a Jeweler design a custom wedding band to go with the engagement ring from her grandmother and propose with that... (You would of course have to borrow the ring or at least take pictures to the Jeweler so that he/she can do a great job. Use someone you know and trust or find a Jeweler through someone you know and trust... I love the antique settings. I think you'd be suprised to find out just how inexpensive a platinum or white gold setting could be purchased from a local antique dealer or even at a pawn shop. i've found bautiful bands at both places. my fiance purchased my engagement ring from an antique dealer and I thought we'd have a hard time findind a band to match because it is so old, but it was suprisingly easy! I would try that. Doesshe have the engagement ring or does her grandmother? I would find a way to take the engagement ring with you on the trip,
