Jewelry Q & A

5 Carat Diamond Solitaire Ring, Ring Size ?

Q.I'm just curious to know what most of your diamond ring sizes are? Meaning--what is the carat weigt of your engagement (or wedding) ring?

A.My ring size is a six. But I don't have a diamond ring. I'm just one of those persons (I'm sure there aren't many) who aren't fond of diamonds. I mean, come on! No color! What fun is that? ;) Okay, they have their merits, but I wanted something different. So Chris and I went to the local (REALLY HUGE) annual gem show last February and we made our own engagement ring. We went looking for a ruby or an emerald, but found this really vibrant blue sapphire that is the most amazing, perfect blue that I've ever seen. It's oval, a little more than a carat, and it's set in a 14k gold ring with small diamonds (I know, I just said I didn't like them...) on the sides. And so... I'm set for the "something blue" on my wedding day! I've decided, however, to not wear it with my wedding band. This shocks some people, but as it just doesn't match, and as I'm not a jewelry person anyway, I'd prefer the simplicity of a single band on my finger. But Chris and I decided to get something that would last - so we bought platinum and 18k gold wedding bands... but that's another story. Maybe I'll tell it sometime. ;) Now, however, I think I'll stop rambling and leave you be. I have a princess (square) cut tiffany set diamond solitaire that's a little over .5 carat. I just wanted a plain single diamond because we were getting very ornate matching wide Celtic bands. Given the fact that at the time my husband was a poor college student I was shocked that I got one that large - I thought I'd be lucky to get .25 ct. My question is how everyone feels about "upgrading" their ring down the road. I have several friends who got larger rings after being married a while but to me it just wouldn't be my engagement ring then. Much as I'd love a huge diamond (all right, I'm shallow and LOVE jewelry!) it just wouldn't have the same meaning to me (I may love jewelry but I'm overly sentimental as well).
