Jewelry Q & A

14k Gold Diamond Earring

Q.I subscribe to Ice dot com's mailing list because they sometimes have some affordable pieces of daily wear jewellery and well, I'm a GIRL, dammit. Girls like sparkleys. Today, however, the mailing list was entitled "LIttle Treasures for your Little Treasures", BLARGH! It featured some hokey ballerina about 6 years old on the header looking all spoiled and prima donna-ish. And what does your "little princes" need to feel "pampered" in this day and age of overly indulgent, obnoxious consumerism? Why it's only diamond, gold and pearl jewellery this time. These kiddie adornments ranged from $80 for a pair of sterling and diamond pink heart earrings (pierced, not clip-ons)to a 14K alphabet bracelet for $400. There was even a sterling and diamond ***Tooth Box*** for $110. For Krust's sake, how long do you think it would take for a small child to destroy/loose/eat a piece of jewellery!? I can only imagine that the people buying this are one of two types: the has more money than brains type whos perfect little cancer curing angel HAS to have absolutely everything OR the leveraged to the hilt idiot who buys pretentious things s/he can't afford in order to show off how stupid s/he really is. Note to lurking parents: If you have enough money to blow several hundred on a bauble for precious to promptly lose, you should probably be calling a local charity and making better use of the money. Sick. I found the whole thing stupid to the point of funny and then unsubscribed to the mailing list.

A.FWIW, Caelan, my grandmother bought me a 14k gold bracelet before I could walk. There are pictures of me wearing it. I never understood the logic behind this, because I was at an age when 1) I could not care less 2) I could destroy the damned thing. Grandma prolly bought it out of her own sense of vanity (which is HUGE). Well, most parents-with-sense prudently put that kind of item away for safekeeping once their child gets through cooing over it. It's a nice heirloom to have for later in life when you are old enough to know the value of such things--or just want a keepsake.
